Financial advisers recommend that you spend no more than 30% of your income on housing - which was also taken into account for these averages. The graphic below shows data as of 2018. 



The Midwest and East Coast are on average much cheaper than the Southwest and West Coast, with South Carolina being the most affordable state along the Atlantic Coast. Myrtle Beach has a median sales price of roughly $170,000 with an average income of $37,000.
